Introduction - What is Digital Marketing?

 Digital Marketing is simply using electronic tools & platforms to promote businesses online. It’s about building relationships with potential customers and converting them into actual clients.
 It was created back in the 90's by marketer for marketer; John Maxwell who coined the term 'Marketing'. He only defined it as “The art of attracting prospects, nurturing them, closing sales, and managing customer relationships over time."
 With the evolution of social networks and internet came the idea of Online Marketing. In fact, he first definition of digital marketing is what we use today to refer to online marketing. And if you think about it, marketing online means marketing via a digital platform rather than through traditional methods.

 History - How did it start?

 As mentioned above, the concept of digital marketing was conceived almost 20 years ago. However, the way people approach their target audience has changed since then. Before the rise of social networks, marketers had to rely on newspapers, television, radio, magazines, etc. to reach their audiences. But these channels were expensive, didn't provide instant results, and could not adapt fast enough to changing trends. As a result, many companies started to implement a cost-effective strategy that uses the internet to advertise their business.
 When Facebook was founded in 2004 its founders wanted to create a website where students could go to learn about social issues. They thought of it as a social networking site and they called it Facebook.
 However, it wasn't until 2007 when Facebook decided to launch a professional version of the social network. In doing so, they transformed the company into a global advertising platform. That same year, Google launched AdWords and now, almost 15 years later, it is still dominating the search engine industry.
 In 2010, YouTube was released. It was created by three guys working at Stanford University. It was originally known as ‘Youthful Broadcasting’. Then one day, while brainstorming ideas for a project, these three friends realized that they had to find a solution to the problem of having no access to broadcast quality video equipment. So they developed a system that would allow anyone to upload videos to the internet.
 By 2012, Instagram was launched. It was a mobile app focused on sharing pictures and short videos. However, in 2016, it morphed into a much more comprehensive social media platform. Today, it lets users share anything from text posts to live streams. While some may consider it just a picture-sharing app, it is actually a whole lot more than that.
 Today, there are countless social media apps out there but Facebook remains the largest social network. According to Statista, it had reached 2.8 billion monthly active visitors worldwide at the end of June 2020.
 Facebook is one of the best ways to build brand awareness and generate traffic. In 2019 alone, brands spent $929 million on ads.

 How does it work?

 There are four primary types of digital marketing strategies: Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Email List Building (EBL) & Content Marketing (CM). Each has a different method of promotion and each works well depending on the objectives and goals of your business.
